Robert R. Marshall

Robert was trained as an engineer, not as an artist, and he has supported himself as an engineer most of his life. He is now retired. Early in life, he was exposed to wilderness and mountains and discovered an inborn love. To continue his hiking, he joined the Sierra Club after graduating and began taking 35mm slides immediately.

Soon he added activism and Club affairs to his interests. He chaired a committee which reported to the Club’s Board of Directors, on which Ansel Adams served. Bob upgraded to a medium-format camera and, in 1964, attended Ansel’s week-long workshop conducted in Yosemite Valley.

Bob knew that his type of photography should be projected or printed in large sizes. The latter was beyond his resources until recent developments in digital methods and inkjet printing allowed him to revisit his earlier work.
